Pre Christmas Trip To Oxford Street - Rossington Main vs. Worsborough Bridge Athletic

A Rossington throw in the first half
One of the good things about visiting my parents is that it normally includes a visit to a new Northern Counties East League ground. Our first choice was Selby that along with a lot of non league fixtures across the country was called off due to water logging. Thankfully the pitch at Oxford Street dealt with the heavy rain and so we had the short drive into South Yorkshire. As with Warrington and Basford last weekend, I had never seen either before and knew very little about either club. From the programme I could see that both sides were in the bottom half of the league with Rossington in fifteenth, a couple of places above Worsborough.

Kick off at Oxford Street
Worsborough create a great early opening for the forward but he drags his shot wide of the target. Rossington come even closer as the centre midfielder powers forward before unleashing a powerful shot that thunders off the bar and to safety. Rossington again power through the Worsborugh defensive line, this time the Worsborough keeper makes a great one on one save. In the closing stages of the half the Rossington keeper produces a decent double save to keep the match goalless.

The early Worsborough chance goes wide
Rossington strike early in the second half with a header back across the keeper and into the net. Worsborough soon have a great chance to level but the free header goes over the bar. The game is now pretty open and Worsborough are almost in which forces the keeper to make a sliding tackle. They come even closer with three chances in very close succession with the Rossington defenders doing well to get a body in front of each one. Rossington secure when the winger gets in on goal and he powers home the clinching goal.

Far side of Oxford Street
To get to Rossington from London is pretty straight forward. The first leg is a train from Kings Cross to Doncaster and then from the adjoining bus station you take the 55 bus to the bottom of Oxford Street. If Doncaster Rovers aren't at home then the bus should take around twenty minutes. We didn't try any pubs in Rossington, instead we stopped en route at near by Auckley to try The Eagle and Child which had a choice of six ales. The clubhouse in the ground had the usual selection of drinks and the sports channels. Sadly I didn't get to try one of the fantastic looking pies. A great afternoon in The NCEL as always.
