Down To The Wire - Warrington Town vs. Basford United

Setting at Cantilever Park
This weekend I had been in the north west for a friends birthday and by happy coincidence, Warrington were at home which set things up perfectly. The weather tried its best to make things difficult but I was very happy when I saw on Twitter on Saturday morning that the pitch was fine and a planned inspection had been cancelled. Warrington's opponents today were Basford United who are located in the northern section of Nottingham. It looked it should be a good game with it pitting fourth against third and unsurprisingly I had never seen either side play before.

Clearly no issues with the pitch at kick off
Warrington are played in very early and the Basford keeper makes a great save to prevent an early goal for the hosts. He pulls off another great after a shot from distance thunders off the bar before the rebound is smashed goalwards which the Basford keeper somehow keeps out. He is however powerless to prevent the opening goal which is a great shot from distance that flies into the net.

In the second half it is the turn of the Warrington keeper to make a great point save to prevent a bullet header flying into the net. Basford do get the equaliser as a ball in is flicked via a head into the opposite corner. Warrington push for a late winner but the contest ends in a draw.

Trains to Warrington Bank Quay from Euston and they take between an hour and a half and two hours. Cantilever Park is then a half walk away. I didn't have too much time in Warrington itself but I did manage to check out the excellent Lower Angel which had a wide selection of ales and BT Sports. The clubhouse at the ground had the usual selection of drinks and the sports channels. The pies from the tea hut are very well recommended. An enjoyable if extremely brief visit to Warrington.
