First Game Back In England - Cambridge United vs. Grimsby Town

Despite being a partisan Scunthorpe fan, I sometimes accompany a College friend to watch his beloved Grimsby Town. The latest trip took us north of London to Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium. Cambridge were also a league side for a long period and habour aspirations of gaining promotion back to the Football League. Despite beating pre season favourites Crawley away on the first day of the season Grimsby have failed to build on that impressive victory. Cambridge are in the bottom half following a poor start.

The two stands where the most vocal home support congregates.

After a cagey start, Grimsby take a real throttle on the game. They have a lot of the ball but fail to force the goalie in to a save. They possibly should have had a penalty when Ademeno is sliced down in the box. As with another Lincolnshire team that I've seen a lot of, Grimsby are punished for not making their dominance pay when Cambridge take the lead. A few weak challenges on the left side allows the winger to cross the ball and Wright can't miss. Cambridge now take the initiative but Grimsby manage to level just before half time. Connell feeding Eagles to slot home.

The main stand.
The game becomes very open in the second half as both teams go for the three points. Again Grimsby have a lot of possession in the final third but there is a lack of movement upfront. Ademeno making his first start for Grimsby comes alive in the second half and keeps the defenders on their toes. Cambridge hit the bar from just outside the box and Croudson makes a decent save from the rebound. Grimsby force the keeper in to a few saves but the game ends in a draw.

Another view from the away end.
The Abbey Stadium is around a two mile walk from the station. As we were pushed for time in both directions we got a taxi which cost seven pounds. The train from Kings Cross took 50 minutes but some trains can take a lot longer so it is worth aiming for a quick train. This also meant that we did not have a chance to check out any pubs. There is a Supporters Club next to the ground which welcomes away fans. There is no bar in the away end.
