FA Vase Favourites March on - St Neots vs. Burnham Ramblers

The main stand at Rowley Park

In the previous round of the FA Vase, St Neots Town beat Felixstowe and Walton 11 - 0. In the league they have a goal difference of +70 after only 18 games. These facts made me decide that this would be a good game to see lots of goals. As you would expect with their goal differnce, Town are well clear at the top of the United Counties League. Burnham are in mid table in the Essex Senior League and in the previous round they beat Kentish Town two nil.

Burnham make a horrific start and gift St Neots a goal after 25 seconds when a misplaced pass puts man in form, Shane Tolley clean through and he nudges the ball past the goal keeper. Four minutes and a knock down allows the St Neots midfielder to double the lead. Burnham come in to the game a bit but St. Neots still poor forward and they have a shot cleared off the line and hit the post. Burnham do win a few corners and free kicks near the box but fail to trouble the home goalie. Just before half time, St Neots strike the potential killer blow. Club captain Glen Fuff scores his first goal for the club from a corner.

The second half starts in a similar fashion to the first. The St. Neots midfielder gets the ball on the edge of the six yard box and fires past the unfortunate goalie. Burnham played some decent football in the second half and created a few chances. They get a consolation goal but this only provides a temporary reprieve. A ball across goal is knocked back across goal for the fifth for the home side. The away side have a goal disallowed for offside before St Neots complete the rout following a great period of passing football.

Uncovered side and dugouts.
I missed my intended train so didn't have a chance to check out any pubs before the game. However, on the walk to the ground I did not see a single pub. The walk is a slightly frustrating one as the ground is located right next to the station but you have to make a 15 minute walk round the railway tracks and through a new housing estate. The clubhouse is a new and a decent size and has a wide choice of drinks. Trains from Kings Cross take around 50 minutes and depart every half hour.

A decent home following just before full time.
