Holiday Flashback II - Seattle Sounders vs. San Jose Earthquakes

On the approach to CenturyLink Field
For the second leg of my US trip I took the train from Portland in to Washington to visit Seattle. Seattle of course has big music history with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Jimmy Hendrix - more on that later. As with Portland, there is a big soccer culture and I was looking forward to seeing The Sounders host San Jose Earthquakes. There was something riding on this game with Seattle having a chance of winning the division. The Sounders play at CenturyLink Field which is also home to the NFL team who's fans have held the world record for the loudest sound generated by a sports crowd.
Seattle, Portland and Vancouver contest the Cascadia Cup which goes to best performing side in matches between the three clubs.

Kick off in the last regular season game
The game has a very end of season feel to it. San Jose take a shock lead with an unfortunate own goal before Seattle score two late goals with the winner coming in injury time to seal the division. In the play offs Seattle would lost to bitter rivals on penalties.

Fan display before kick off
You can fly direct from London to Seattle and there is a lot to see it Seattle. As I mentioned at the start there is a big music history in Seattle and the Museum of Pop Culture is a brilliant museum with great displays of music and visual media memorabilia. The museum is next door to the Space Needle whose rotation can prove a little disorientating. I also took a trip on the water and sadly found out too late how easy island hoping would have been, Similar to Portland there are some great bars, my favourites being The Teku Tavern and The Seattle Beer Co. The ground is a short walk from the town and The Owl N' Thistle is a good bet for pre game beer and sports. As with Portland Timbers, there is a more than decent choice of beer in the ground and programmes are free although it can be a bit tricky finding one. After two games I really enjoyed my experience of MLS and will try to catch more in future trips.
