Belated winter sun at Coventry Road |
Last weekend saw the first frost and snow week of the season, seeing a large number of games being postponed. I had an eye on Melton Town and Stafford but heard too late these games had survived and opted for the safe 4G option at Bedworth. Although I had been saving Bedworth for a rainy day, I was really keen to visit due to the elevated main stand you can see in the opening picture. There were another couple of options to opt for this match with the first being that fact that Bedworth's opponents Barwell were based just only ten miles away and with Bedworth beginning to look marooned at the bottom of the table, they really needed to win today's encounter. Barwell themselves weren't completely free of the relegation picture, sitting seven points clear of Lowestoft (who beat second placed Stourbridge) in the last relegation spot. In the reverse fixture back in November, both sides shared the points in a one all draw.

Aforementioned stand at kick off |
The first half is a tentative affair with both sides having having chances without seriously testing the keeper. The best chance of the half comes when the Barwell keeper makes a great save at the back post from an effort after a corner.

First half action with the leisure centre flume in the background |
Barwell come close when a drilled cross finds the man in space but his header is straight at the keeper. Bedworth then almost create a headed chance of their own which is sadly just out of reach this time. Barwell come close again as a ball from a pull back manages to elude everyone. The deciding moment is a result of the Bedworth keeper spilling a shot which allows the Barwell forward to score from close range. Things get worse for Bedworth in the dying moments as they are reduced to ten men.

Acrobatic first half action |
It's a two leg journey to Bedworth from London and the first leg is a train to Coventry from Euston which takes around an hour. Then the second leg is to take the short ride to Bedworth which takes quarter of an hour. My favourite of the pubs I tried in Bedworth with a good selection of beers and the sports channels was
The Prince of Wales. The other two (
The Travellers Rest and
The Old Black Bank) are a bit closer to the ground and both were decent enough. The clubhouse had the usual selection of drinks but the absolute highlight was the amazing food where I had an epic faggot batch which is essential food when visiting The Midlands. The club and the town were both very friendly and Bedworth is an excellent choice for a cold or wet (or just any day in general) day.
