Tunbridge push for a late leveller. | |
I managed to negotiate having the bank holiday off and so I decided to take in the Kent League match between Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks. The home side were having a mixed start to the season, winning, drawing and losing one of their three games in the league so far. The visitors arrived at Culverdean looking for their first league point of the season. A couple of seasons ago I went to Greatness Park to see Sevenoaks defeat Erith Town, also in the Kent League.

First half action with the stand in the background. |
The game has a really scrappy start and neither side manages to create any clear cut chances. There are quite a few heavy challenges and the game struggles to get going. Sevenoaks manage to force a few corners but these are wasted by the visitors. Tunbridge then begin have more of the ball in the Sevenoaks half and create a few chances. It is Sevenoaks though who strike the first blow. Following a throw in, the young midfielder is allowed to cut inside and place an effort past the keeper.

Tunbridge attack in the second half. |
Tunbridge start the second half on the attack but it is the visitors who create the first chance of the half. A Sevenoaks player is allowed a free header from a corner, but the keeper makes a decent save to keep the effort out. The Sevenoaks keeper then makes a good save of his own when the Tunbridge player is allowed to shoot from outside the area. In the final quarter of the game the home side have a lot of the ball but fail to make the keeper work again and the visitors claim a deserved first win of the season.

The dugout side of the ground. |
Trains to Tunbridge Wells depart from Charing Cross and the journey takes just over fifty minutes. Trains leave from Tunbridge Wells depart every fifteen minutes. Before the game I went to
The Rose And Crown which was decent enough without being spectacular. The Weatherspoons on the road back to the station is also worth a visit for the impressive interior. The walk to the ground takes just under thirty minutes but there are steep climbs both ways. The clubhouse is welcoming and having the burger bar in the clubhouse is a good marketing ploy as it makes it very hard to resist!
