Numerous areas of seating at Blackmore Crescent |
For my second Combined Counties game of the week, I travelled to Sheerwater for their home match in Division One against Cobham. I'd seen Cobham earlier in the season away at Eversley where they played their part in n entertaining two nil win for the home side. Sheerwater were in dire need of a win after a run of twenty one games without one had left them at the foot of the table. Cobham were sitting firmly in mid table and were in no danger of going up or down. This was my fifth visit to the Woking area for football. I'd visited for games at Westfield, Knaphill, Chobham, Woking themselves and now Sheerwater.

Another view of the seated accommodation before kick off. |
Cobham make a very strong start to the game and really should score at least one. The closest they come is when they strike the bar from just outside the box. They create several other decent chances but fail to take any of them. Towards the end of the half it's Sheerwater's turn to miss several chances. The best chance is when the Sheerwater player is free in the penalty area but he puts his volley wide of the goal. The game is somehow nil nil at half and both teams were kicking themselves for not scoring at least once.

Cobham on the attack in the first half. |
The entire second half is end to end with both teams having a real good go at each other. Cobham hit the bar again and they do eventually get on the score sheet. A ball through is slotted home and the deadlock is finally broken. Both teams pile forward looking for the vital second goal and it is Sheerwater who get it to earn an deserved equaliser. Following a quick break the winger is fouled in the area and the penalty is dispatched. Things then get better for Sheerwater when a Cobham player is dismissed for throwing the ball at an opponent. Despite being down to ten, Cobham still attack and despite a frantic finish the game ends in a draw. A great advert for the division.

The stand at Blackmore Crescent. |
The ground is just under half an hour walk from West Byfleet station. There is also a bus from the station which takes you most of the way to the ground. Trains to West Byfleet depart from Waterloo every thirty minutes and the journey takes about half an hour. Right next to the station is
The Catherine Of Aragon which is a large pub that also has a few ales on. The clubhouse is quite basic but does sell alcohol and excellent hot dogs!.
