Skies over Eversley Cross |
With the stormy weather this week there were a lot of postponements and a game that I had confirmation that it was defiantly going head was Eversley vs. Cobham in the Combined Counties League Division One. The ground is quite new and the grass felt remarkably dry under foot. I'd seen Eversley outclassed at Spelthorne Sports earlier in season but despite that setback they found themselves close to the promotion places. I'd been to Cobham's Leg Of Mutton Field for a Mole Valley SCR cup tie a couple of seasons ago and the visitors were comfortably in mid table before the game.

Difficulties in getting a taxi mean that I miss the first five minutes of the game and as I arrive, the Eversley keeper makes a brilliant save from just outside the box. The visitors continue to dominate the opening stages and the keeper makes a few more decent saves. The Eversley players struggle to keep onside and this hampers their progress in the game. Once they manage to start getting themselves onside the home team begin to create a few of their own chances. The best one being when the striker hits the post when being put through on the keeper. Neither side can put away a chance and game is goalless at half time.

First half action. |
The game is really end to end in the second half as both teams push for the win. There are several occasions where a Cobham player drills the ball across the box but no one is ever able to apply the finishing touch. When the opening goal does eventually arrive it is a real cracker. The midfielder, who has only been on the pitch for a few minutes picks up the ball twenty five yards out and smashes an unstoppable shot past the keeper. The second goal has an air of controversy about it. The Cobham players believe a player is fouled in the build up but the referee plays on and the striker hammers the ball home from just inside the box. Cobham push forward in the closing stages but the game ends two nil to Eversley.

I got a taxi from Sandhurst station but I believe you can get a bus from Blackwater station. The taxi cost ten pounds both ways and so the bus could have been the better idea. While I waited for the taxi, I had a drink at
The Village Inn which was pretty decent and is located opposite the station. I was told that the bar doesn't open until after the game and is located at the cricket club which is just next door. There is the
Frog and Wicket which is close to the ground. I didn't actually visit it but it looks like it could be quite good. One thing I will say about the ground is that they need to build a hard walkway to the pitch from the car park! But aside from that minor point the ground is worth a visit and the surroundings are quite scenic.
