Apparent Late Flurry Secures Big Win - Wokingham And Emmbrook vs. Milton United

Lucky people in the shade at Lowther Road
After the lengthy trip on Saturday I was looking for something a bit closer on Bank Holiday Monday. The closest new ground was Wokingham And Emmbrook which was around an hour and from base (that is very close!) who were hosting Milton United in The Hellenic League Division One East. I have seen Wokingham and Emmbrook at 'home' previously for an FA Cup tie with Camberley when they were ground sharing at Bracknell Town which was a welcome break from my Olympics shift 'fun'. It wasn't too long that I visited Milton United's Potash Lane at the end of last season and they had won two of their four games so far this season.

Kick off from the cricket square side of the ground
Wokingham start fast and early on a shot on the turn goes just wide. They take the lead shortly afterwards when a free kick is flicked on before being turned in from close range. Milton are struggling to get into the game and they are thankful when a powerful shot thunders off the bar. Wokingham get a deserved second as the forward is played in as he they rounds the keeper to make it two.

A Milton chance goes just over
Milton United do well to get a ball in the box at the start of the half but the home defence clear the ball. They come even closer as the forward finds it at his feet before he blazes the ball over. Wokingham get what I think is a late third and at this point I leave thinking the game is pretty much done but there are three extra goals and the game finishes five one. I really need to rethink my priorities!

Wokingham attacking the railway end
To get to Wokingham you can take a direct train from Waterloo taking just over an hour. It is then a half hour walk to the station or you can take the X4 bus to within five minutes of the ground. Wokingham is a pretty town and my first stop was The Crispin (patron saint of shoemakers) which was a great ale pub. Then if you don't want to go into the town then The Queens Head and The Hope and Anchor across the road from each other will set you up before the walk to the ground. I really liked the feel of the club, they had the sports channels and a choice of lagers. Probably owing to the weather they had a good barbecue, a great end to the Bank Holiday treble.

Great bank holiday crowd
