Atomics Fission Doesn't Materialise - AFC Aldermaston vs. Thame Rangers

Changing room block at The Rec Soc
Last season when I doing research before a trip to Tadley Calleva, I noticed on the map how close AFC Aldermaston were and have been keen for a visit since. I finally got round to it last weekend for their first vs. third match in The Hellenic League Division One East against Thame Rangers. The Rec Soc is an interesting ground as it is located on the edge of The Atomic Weapons Establishment and so it makes an interesting walk up to the ground. It also meant that whenever a ball went over the fence behind the far goal, the teams were at the mercy of the military police to retrieve the balls. Aldermaston were top at the start of play although they had played six more games than today's visitors who were unbeaten in the league so far this season.

Kick off at The Rec Soc
The game has a scrappy start and the nearest we come to an opening is prevented by a great Thame block at the last moment. Aldermaston then have a free kick from a good spot that is easily dealt with. The visitors then the lead with a shot from the edge of the area that flies past the goalkeeper. Aldermaston equalise before half time as they get behind the Thame defence and when the ball is pulled back to the penalty spot it is lashed home. Thame are gifted back the lead as the keeper is caught well out of his goal before Thame score from distance. The closest Aldermaston come to equalising is from a shot after a cross isn't fully cleared but the shot goes just wide.

Aldermaston attack in the first half. Note the razor wire behind the goal.
As with Tadley, the closest railway station is Basingstoke. As a lot of South Western Railway drivers don't work weekends any more I had to take the scenic route here. I first took a train to Reading from Paddington before changing for the train to Basingstoke. If you time the connections right, this can take around an hour. Then from outside the station you can take the number two bus to Tadley. with the bus stopping ten minutes or so from the ground. Make sure you use the visitors entrance on Aldermaston Road.  If you want to watch the early kick off then The Fox and Hounds does the job with a good selection of drinks. The clubhouse is the social club of The AWE and so is a decent set with a wide choice of beers and the sports channels. If you fancy a game at a ground in a unique setting then AFC Aldermaston is an excellent choice and you will be made most welcome.
