Flashback - Newcastle Town vs. St. Helens Town

I didn't get to a game this weekend as I was visiting friends in Stoke. On a previous visit, I managed to catch Newcastle (Under-Lyme) Town at home to St. Helens Town in the North West Counties League. Newcastle-Under-Lyme has been mixed up Upon-Tyne before. Most famously when the government paid £2.8 million to the wrong council. Newcastle were at the top of the league at this point, but would not go on to win the league as Kirkham and Wesham (now AFC Flyde) won most of their games in hand to take the title.

Newcastle dominated for most of the game. They had numerous chances in the first half but failed to take advantage. St Helens had a few chances from corners but didn't threaten much. When the Newcastle goal eventually came it was quite fortuitous. The St. Helens defender was adjudged to have cut down the attacker just inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. The penalty was easily dispatched and Newcastle went on to win the game.

There is no direct bus from Stoke station to the ground. You have to take a bus from outside the station to Newcastle bus station and get another bus or it's just under half an hour walk to the ground. There are several pubs in Newcastle town centre. Two highly recommended ones are The Old Brown Jug and The Old Bull's Head. Nearer to the ground is The Orange Tree which is more of a gastro pub. The clubhouse is a decent size and has a good choice of drinks.
